Obituary for Catherine Murphy

Catherine Murphy, age 61, was born and raised in Lowell but most recently lived in Pearson, Georgia until she became ill. Cathy passed away peacefully with family by her side after a brief battle with cervical cancer. She fought hard and endured months of aggressive treatments.

Cathy was born in Kilwinning, Scotland on May 19, 1961. She was predeceased by her mother, Elizabeth (Donnelly) Michel, her father George Murphy, and her sister Tracey Everett.

Cathy attended Lowell Public Schools. She spent the last 5 years in Georgia where she helped take care of her ailing father before his passing in September 2018. During this time, she and her stepmother Carolyn developed a strong bond and enjoyed each other’s company. Cathy loved spending time with her family, especially her grandkids. She enjoyed the company of her life long best friend Joyce, often going to the beach or just taking a ride.

Cathy was preceded by the love of her life, Richard “Bo” Hoffman. She is survived by her 3 children, Kerry Sylvester and her husband Patrick, Melissa Hill and her husband Kenny, and William Murphy and his fiancé Holly Schofield, and her stepchildren, Jessica Mason and Richard Hoffman. She is also survived by her 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth Dupont, Landon Hill, Tucker Hill, Kaison Murphy, and her step granddaughter, Sarah Mason. Cathy also leaves behind her stepmother, Carolyn Murphy, stepfather, Richard Michel and his companion Barbara Cormier, as well as her brothers and sisters, George Murphy Jr., Frank Murphy and his wife Linda, Daniel Murphy, her sister Tracey Everett who preceded her in death by 10 months and her husband Tom Everett, Michael Michel and his wife Kimberly, and Christine Reardon and her husband Patrick. She also leaves behind her nieces and nephews, Sean, Paul, Michelle, Michael M., Shauna, Meghan, Michael D., Chiara, Ryan, Cameron, Kyle, as well as several grand nieces and nephews.

Cathy was fortunate to have a lifelong best friend, Joyce Trouville, and considered her daughters, Stephanie and Jessica, as nieces.

Our family would like to thank the medical staff at High Point Hospice House in Haverhill for their compassion and kindness during Cathy’s final days.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, December 13th from 9am to 11am at the Dracut Funeral Home, 2159 Lakeview Ave., Dracut. Prayers will conclude the visitation at 11am. Interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, the family strongly encourages donations to be made in Cathy’s honor to the Gynecologic Oncology Group Foundation at gog.org. Donations directly fund the GOG educational and research initiatives. The foundation collaborates with the industry to find new treatments and more effective prevention while promoting excellence in scientific research in the field of gynecologic malignancies.
