Obituary for Charles James "Charlie" Hamel

Charles “Charlie” James Hamel, age 76, a resident of North Chelmsford, formerly of Dracut, passed away at Lowell General Hospital on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Valerie G. (Parker) Hamel with whom he enjoyed 55 memorable years of marriage.

He was born in Lowell on November 1, 1946 and was a son of the late Leo and Theresa (Lennon) Hamel.

Charlie worked for the Lowell Fruit Company until the age of 44 when he became disabled after his first heart attack. He later was a bartender at Catcher's Mitt in Lowell where he was a staple. A passionate fan of Harley Davidson motorcycles, he was a member of the Merrimack Valley Hogs and often took part in fundraisers and charity rides. Charlie owned a Ferris wheel and would participate in festivals and carnivals. More than anything, he adored his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved time with his brother, fishing on Freeman Lake and was happiest surrounded by his loved ones at summer cookouts and holiday parties.

In addition to his loving wife, Charlie is survived by his daughters, Sandra Doucette and her husband Stephen of Dracut, Debra Banks and her husband Barry of Gardner, and Tara Woodman of Lowell; his 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; his siblings, Leo Hamel Jr. and his wife Rosemary of N. Chelmsford, and Linda Brett and her husband Brad of Rainbow Lake, NY; his in-laws, Cynthia Terrell of Townsend, and Lauri Parker and Jill Sikora of Rochester, NH; and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his extended family at the Catcher’s Mitt where many friendships were made over the years, and the motorcycle community that Charlie considered his family, especially the M.V. Hogs and the Intrepid Souls of Lowell. He was predeceased by his parents-in-law, Robert and Beverly Parker, and his best dog, Blackie.

Visiting Hours will be held on Tuesday, May 30th from 3pm to 7pm at the Dracut Funeral Home, 2159 Lakeview Ave., Dracut. His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at 10am at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Lowell Cemetery, Lowell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charlie’s memory to the MSPCA at Nevins Farm at mspca.org/nevinsgift.
