Obituary for David M. Barrett

David M. Barrett, age 63, a longtime resident of Tyngsborough, Massachusetts passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Jean (Curley) Barrett with whom he shared 38 years of marriage.

He was born in Worcester on April 20, 1960 and was the son of the late Robert and Eleanor (Mitchell) Barrett.

David was raised in Stow, and his youth years were filled with playing hockey, fishing with his family, and helping his parents build a lakeside second home in Vermont. In college, he studied software and electrical engineering with undergraduate and masters degrees from WPI and UMass Amherst. At WPI, he was a member of the TKE fraternity where he formed lifelong friends, and subsequently served on its board for years. David worked in high technology for 30 years, employed by Wang Laboratories and Emulex Corporation, and was also a principal in a startup called Arthur Dent. In recent years, he turned his passion for watching his children play youth soccer into a rigorous schedule of refereeing youth, high school, and college soccer games. David loved deep sea fishing for either cod or tuna and enjoyed many trips over the decades. He was a boy scout leader for many years for local Troop 46. He also enjoyed hunting, woodworking, and being a Patriots and Bruins fan.

In addition to his wife, David is survived by his daughter Kathleen Barrett of Lincoln MA, his son Kevin Barrett of Somerville MA, his grandrabbits Yogi and Finn, and his granddog Sam. He also leaves behind his brother Michael Barrett who resides in Florida, his aunt Carol LaPierre of Hudson MA, and many cousins and good friends.

Funeral services and interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David’s name to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (www.whoi.edu) to honor him and his deep concern for the health of the ocean and its wildlife populations.
