Obituary for Esther Vavra (Sokorelis)

Esther (Sokorelis) Vavra, 81, a longtime resident of Dracut, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at Lowell General Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Edward F. Vavra with whom she shared 55 years of marriage until his passing in 2020.

She was born in Lowell on February 3, 1942 and was a daughter of the late George L. and Aphrodite (Ziakas) Sokorelis.

She proudly worked for the Air Force Department of Defense. In her spare time, she liked reading, antiquing, and bowling with her league at Brunswick Lanes. She loved hosting cookouts at her home, especially on the Fourth of July. She enjoyed going away with her sisters and their husbands as well as friends on Columbus Day weekend. It was a tradition that spanned over 20 years. The holidays were special, as she took pride in hosting and entertaining her family and friends for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Greek Easter. One of her favorite places was the beach, and she could be found in the summer enjoying Plum Island or Rye, NH. Esther was an active member at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church for many years.

Esther leaves her children, Kristin Peterson and her husband Raymond of Lowell, and Christopher G. Vavra and his wife April of Windham, NH; her grandchildren, Riley and Logan Peterson and Catherine and Max Vavra; and her siblings, Frances Whalen and her husband Robert of Lowell, Lois McCabe and her husband William of Lowell, and Eli Sokorelis of Seabrook, NH. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and lifelong close friends who will miss her terribly.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm. Her funeral service will be held in the funeral home following the visitation at 1:00. Interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284.
