Obituary for George Edward Santos Jr.

Sergeant George E. Santos Jr., Lowell Police Department, Retired

Retired Lowell Police Sergeant George E. “Pudgie” Santos Jr., age 73, a resident of Pepperell, passed away at his home on Thursday, April 6, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Cynthia Anne (Kubit) Santos with whom he enjoyed 50 years of marriage.

George was born in Lowell on March 6, 1950 and was the son of the late George and Helen (Stanulonis) Santos.

He proudly served as a radioman in the US Navy aboard the USS Puget Sound and was a Vietnam veteran. Additionally, George served the City of Lowell as a police officer for 32 years. In 1993 he was promoted to sergeant and retired in 2003. Over the course of his police career, he worked on many projects he was passionate about and proud of, including setting up the department’s shooting range, serving as a firearms instructor and armorer, managing the Back Central Street Precinct, and running the Traffic Bureau.

After his retirement, he worked at Washington Savings Bank as an armed security guard for 5 years – a job he truly enjoyed.

During his younger years you could often find George fishing, hunting, or coaching his daughter’s softball teams. He enjoyed riding his police motorcycle, a Harley Davidson Road King. He loved his tool collection and had MacGyver-like skills that enabled him to repair just about anything. An animal lover, George adored his chocolate labs, Maggie, Saddie, and Jazz and his daughter’s dog, Lily. He loved his family and enjoyed hosting cookouts at his home and making people laugh. George was hilarious, generous, caring, and a good listener. He had an extremely close and special connection with his daughter. They shared the same sense of humor and spent a lot of time together laughing and enjoying each other's company. He will be missed more than words can say.

In addition to his loving wife, George is survived by his daughter, Mellissa Santos and her fiancé Chris Goscinski of Westford; his siblings, Frank Santos, and Patricia Stuart and her husband William B. Jr.; his beloved uncle, John "Beaver" Stanulonis; his godmother, Theresa Santos; his brother-in-law, Stas Kubit and his wife Anita; his sister-in-law, Maria Dojny and her husband Robert; and several nieces and a nephew.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, April 10th from 4pm to 7pm at the Dracut Funeral Home, 2159 Lakeview Ave., Dracut. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10am at Blessed Trinity Parish - Saint Catherine of Alexandria Church, 107 North Main St., Westford. Interment will follow in St. Catherine of Alexandria Cemetery, Westford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s memory to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund at nleomf.org.
