Obituary for Michael “Mikey” John Howe

Michael “Mikey” John Howe, age 41, a lifelong resident of Dracut, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 2, 2023.

He was born in Lowell on February 28, 1982 and was the son of Richard T. Howe of Mont Vernon, NH and the late Patricia R. MacPhail.

Mikey attended Greater Lowell Technical High School in Tyngsborough. Mikey’s mom dedicated her life to Mikey’s care and special needs until her death in December 2020. His mom’s dedication to Mikey found them a welcoming and loving program called S.T.E.P. (Special Teams for Exceptional People) where Mikey would meet and become best of friends with so many. Mikey enjoyed S.T.E.P. dances, bowling, basketball, soccer, and the countless outings that brought him extreme joy and happiness. Mikey, alongside his mom, volunteered countless hours for many of the S.T.E.P. fundraisers held to keep the program available to this special community. Mikey was a huge Boston sports fan, with Tom Brady still being his #1, and loved Cape Cod and Sebago Lake in Maine, Dracut Firehouse Engine 3, and time on his iPad to connect with all his family and friends. He was an avid (and impressive!) bowler who enjoyed weekly bowling with his S.T.E.P. friends. Mikey was everyone’s weekly Wednesday reminder of “Hump Day”. Whether through clothing he wore, or Facebook messages he sent, you could always count on Mikey’s motivational reminder to keep going. Mikey brought joy to those around him with his warm smile, quick wit, and sometimes wicked sense of humor.

In addition to his father and stepmother Donna, Mikey is survived by his siblings, Richard Howe and his wife Kaila of Merrimack, NH, Brian Howe and his wife Briana of Milford, NH, Matthew Howe of Braintree, and Lisa Howe of Chelmsford, along with many loving aunts and uncles, several cousins, nieces and nephews, and countless amazing friends.

Mikey’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the S.T.E.P. program and the many individuals and programs which provided Mikey with friendship, guidance, and opportunities.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, April 12th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at the Dracut Funeral Home, 2159 Lakeview Ave., Dracut. His funeral service will be held at 11 o’clock following the visitation at the funeral home. Procession to Fox Hill Cemetery, Billerica immediately after the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mikey’s memory to S.T.E.P. (Special Teams for Exceptional People), PO Box 8857, Lowell, MA 01853 or online at stepinc.us.
