Michael was born on October 9, 1934, in Mikrokastro, Greece (Macedonia). Michael received his formal education in Greece and immigrated to the United States in 1955.

Michael worked in the shoe industry in Lynn, Massachusetts for 14 years. He also worked at the Grace Shoe Company in Lowell, and later retired as foreman from the Paris Shoe Company in Lowell.
