Patricia A. (Smith) McCarthy, 86, a longtime resident of Lowell, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2022, at Mary Immaculate Health/Care Center, Lawrence, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard D. McCarthy Sr. with whom she shared 63 years of marriage until his passing in 2019.

She was born in Waltham on May 19, 1936, and was a daughter of the late Gordon and Gertrude (Munroe) Smith.

Patricia was raised and educated in Watertown, and went on to earn her LPN from Tewksbury State Hospital. She and her husband settled in Lowell, where they raised their family. Patricia enjoyed a career in nursing, having worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital and at D’Youville Life and Wellness Community, where she served as head nurse. She was devoted to caring for her patients. In her spare time, she enjoyed crafting, shopping, and reading. She cherished being a mother and grandmother, and was so proud of her family. She cherished the time they spent together.

Patricia leaves her children, Irene Wagner of Tyngsboro, Brenda Renner of Tyngsboro, and Donald McCarthy and his wife Sandra of Derry, NH; her 8 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and her sisters, Sandra Galarneau and her husband Roger of FL, Joan Benoit of Derry, NH, and Sally Defina and Nancy Hadlock both of FL. She also leaves her very best friend Betty McKenna of Hudson, NH and many nieces and nephews.

Sadly, she was predeceased by her son Richard D. McCarthy, Jr., her sons-in-law Al Wagner and Ron Renner, and her sister Linda Bistany.
