Obituary for Paul R. "Dick" McCarthy

Paul R. “Dick” McCarthy, age 85, passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2023 with his family by his side. He was the loving husband of Phyllis (Young) McCarthy with whom he celebrated over 61 years of marriage.

He was born in Lowell on April 14, 1937 and was the son of the late Paul and Marie (Adams) McCarthy.

Paul grew up in Lowell and graduated from Lowell High School in 1955. After high school he served his country in the United States Navy, where he discovered his love for electronics. He was on the USS Intrepid working on jet fighter planes and was part of the VF41 Squadron. He proudly let family and friends know he was a part of that team. After the Navy he worked for High Voltage, Raytheon, and finally, at Wang Labs until his retirement after over 35 years. While at Wang he attended night school and graduated from Lowell Technological Institute. He played in the Wang softball league for years where he would always play 3rd base for the action. He also bowled in the Friday night league at Brunswick Lanes for many years. Paul and Phyllis were well known for their rides for coffee that would lead anywhere in New England and several times to the casinos in Connecticut. They also took vacations, driving across the country trying to touch all the states. Paul was a fan of all the Boston sports teams. His best times were at his kitchen table, whether having coffee with his family or goofing around with his grandchildren, Jerrick and Maya whom he was very proud of.

In addition to his wife, Paul is survived by his daughter Joyce Servente and her son Jerrick of Dracut, and his son, Scott, his wife Cheryl, and their daughter Maya of Tyngsboro.

Sadly, he was predeceased by his sister, Jaqueline McCarthy who passed away March 13, 2019.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, February 15th from 4pm to 7pm at the Dracut Funeral Home, 2159 Lakeview Ave., Dracut. A funeral home service will be held on Thursday at 10am. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Chelmsford. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Paul’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by visiting stjude.org.
