Obituary for Selma Frida Lloyd (Smith)

Selma Frida (Smith) Lloyd, age 95, a longtime resident of Dracut, passed away at Fairhaven Healthcare Center on Monday, March 14, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Donald Edward Lloyd with whom she shared 35 years of marriage before he passed on December 21, 1984.

She was born at Fort Wadsworth, former military base on Staten Island, New York on April 11, 1926 and was the daughter of the late Ray and Selma (Weyland) Smith.

Selma grew up in New York and moved to Lowell when she was a teenager. She graduated from Lowell High School. She married and raised her four children while working in the Lowell shoe mills as a stitcher. Selma may have been part of the first movement of work from home mothers, as she had a factory sewing machine installed in her home. Selma enjoyed spending time with her family, dancing with her husband, a good donut, crocheting and gardening. She got so excited about the warm weather and digging in the earth, that she always raked her yard “too” early in the spring and her neighbors would joke, that “If Selma is raking don’t put the shovel away yet” and sure, enough there would be more snow. She was always singing, and the neighborhood moms would know where their children had been playing that day, as they came home singing a new tune. Quick witted and generous are just a few ways to describe her. She learned to love baseball by watching her grandsons play, and her neighbor visited regularly to enjoy the Red Sox with her.

As dementia set in, she needed more care than her family could provide, and the staff and residents at Fairhaven Nursing Home considered her family and took the best of care for her over the past few years. Her children are forever grateful.

Survived by her children; Donald Lloyd and his wife Linda, Robert Lloyd and his wife Virginia and Lori Demers, her son-in-law, Steven Rollo, her sisters; Ellen Carpentier and Mary Ann Lloyd, her brother, Richard Smith, 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, and her beautiful pitbull, Nala.
In addition to her loving husband, Selma is predeceased by her daughter; Cheryl Rollo, siblings; Atta Bourgerois, Guy Smith and Ray Smith.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, March 18, 2022 from 10am to 11am at the DRACUT FUNERAL HOME, 2159 Lakeview Avenue, DRACUT. A funeral home service will follow. Interment in Edson Cemetery, LOWELL.
